Year-end & tax

Small limited companies

What's changing

MTD for Income Tax, in plain English

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self Assessment (MTD ITSA) means sole traders and landlords above the income threshold must:

  • Keep digital records of income and expenses
  • Send HMRC a summary every quarter using approved software
  • Submit a final declaration after the tax year ends

It's more frequent than the old annual tax return — which is exactly why having someone handle it for you matters. I set up the software, connect it to your bank, and take care of every deadline.

Common questions

MTD ITSA, answered

Do I actually have to do this?

If your combined self-employment and property income is over £50,000, MTD for Income Tax is mandatory from April 2026. The £30,000 threshold follows in April 2027 and £20,000 in April 2028. If you're below £20,000 you're not in scope yet — but the old Self Assessment rules still apply. Check the full guide →

What counts towards the income threshold?

It's your gross income (turnover) from self-employment and property combined — before expenses — not your profit. So two smaller income streams can add up to cross the line.

I already have an accountant — is switching a hassle?

No. I handle the entire move: I contact your current accountant, get the records, and sort the HMRC authorisations. It's free and usually done within a week.

What software will I need?

HMRC-recognised software. On the sole trader and landlord plans I set you up on Xero (or a compatible option) and connect it to your bank, so most of the record-keeping happens automatically. (Software isn't included on the limited company plan — I'll advise on the best fit.)

Will you grow into a big faceless firm?

No — that's the point. I keep the client list deliberately small so you always deal with me directly. When I'm full, I'm full.
